I can say that PL/SQL is almost certainly something you want to be proficient at - as well as SQL. It is not actually necessary - depending on what type of DBA you want to become.

I know DBA's that know very little PL/SQL and even SQL - just the basics. But since they are in charge of backup/recovery/high availability - they are just fine. But then a development DBA - they would need to know sql and plsql better than the developers (just to teach them how to do it!)

"it depends" :)

BKS, February 20, 2014 - 8:54 pm UTC

I'm curious to know what do development DBA do that development lead or senior developers can not? I've never come across such role till now. May be deploy code since developer may not have production access?

Dear TOM

I have been graduated in December 2003 bachelor degree in computer science , then after that I have taken 6 month Course in oracle developer (PL / SQL ) and forms , In December 2004 I got a job in a company this company profile is electrical and instrumentation for oil and gas field I have fill many positions :

1- I start as document controller for one year.
2- Microsoft System administrator for one and half year
3- Document controller for one year in QA / QC department.
4- HR / local affairs (government relation) department for one year.

Recently I have been working in HR / local affairs (government relation) department.
A long time and long period from the date on which I had stopped practices an oracle developer (PL / SQL) so far, and a long time and long period from the date on which I had finished my undergraduate degree so far, the period length is 10 years and 4 month.
So I would like to be an oracle database administrator so I have heard and seen in some web site given instruction that I should have programming skills.
If it is true that I should have programming skills, so is it necessary to study and review the following subjects:

1- C ++ programming language and object oriented programming (OOP).
2- Database concept.
3- Data structure.
4- File organization.
5- Algorithm.
6- Statistics.
7- Discrete mathematics.

If necessary to study and review the previous subjects how long it will take to acquire programming skills?

Does an oracle database administrator need to have programming work experience?

How long time I need to acquire programming work experience before I start learning an oracle database administration?

Does an oracle database administrator need specific level of application development skills?

What are the steps to become an oracle database administrator?

What are the requirements to be an oracle database administrator?

Does an oracle database administrator need to have MBA (master of business administration)?

My age now is 35 years old is it suitable and Compatible for me to study and become an oracle database administrator or I am too old and it is too late to be an oracle database administrator.

I realy appreciate your help in this matter.

Thanks

Nagi Yahiya
