Hi Tom,

I am working in Oracle PL/SQL since from version 8, from past 11 years and would like to continue so.

I have been hearing from my colleagues that the new development projects using Oracle PL/SQL will be almost a stop in the future and only the existing application maintenance/support kind of projects will be left out to look into the jobs.

Is it wise to think for a shift in the carrier from Oracle PL/SQL to something
like Big Data with Hadoop(Java) and Oracle R after working in Oracle PL/SQL after 11 years?

How do you think big data technology/jobs can impact Oracle pl/sql jobs?

Kindly let us all the future of Oracle - PL/SQL in terms of jobs and the new development projects that one can look for the next 10 years.

Thanks,
Raghavendra Boralli

Either your colleagues have a better crystal ball than me - or more likely - they're guessing. The fact is no one knows what's going to happen the in future. I can't tell you what jobs will or won't be available because it's unknowable.

That said, in my opinion there will still be new and exciting PL/SQL jobs for many years to come. It's a core component of the Oracle database and APEX. People are building plenty of new APEX apps. See the following for some examples:

https://apex.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=411:5:::NO:::

As I'm writing this (Sept 2015), the TOBIE programming language index shows PL/SQL up two places on last year (from 20 -> 18):

http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html

PL/SQL was also a key component of actively developed applications in the role I left last year. So I think there will be PL/SQL jobs for the foreseeable future.

There will be new jobs using Big Data technology. I doubt this will have a significant impact on the PL/SQL jobs available however. It's still a relatively niche area that's not relevant for many applications.

BIG Data is not there to replace RDBMS

Karthick, September 08, 2015 - 10:54 am UTC

I understand your concerns. I had the same. The best way to get rid of it is to understand what is Big Data and what's its offering.

I would suggest if possible you do some crash course on Big Data to understand what it is.

The fundamental misconception is that Big data is going to replace relational database. After spending some quality time to understanding big data I came to know that is not true.

Big data is there to address completely different problem.

So IMHO RDBMS is going to be there for a very long time and it will evolve as it has always done. And Oracle is the pioneer in RDBMS software and hence they are going to be there for a very long time.

Here is what the big guy has to say
