Our senior DBA is in the process of setting up Oracle 18c so that we can "migrate" from Oracle 10Gr2, and we're having trouble with finding a way to manage the 18c environment. We've been trying to use SQL Developer because it seems that the old Enterprise Manager has been changed and we are not sure how we could install/utilize the new EM without setting up another set of servers for it (docs make it seem like you need a separate repository for it on a separate DB server).

Can you clarify what the requirements are for using the new EM for us? We spec'd out the new 18c environment thinking that we'd only need two servers per (two for Dev and two for Prod) but now it seems using EM would put us up to four.

Thanks a lot!

(BTW, on your pre-submission page it says "Yes, I understand that if my question does meet the above criteria, then my question will be rejected with no further followup possible". Shouldn't that be "... if my question does NOT meet ..."?) Thanks again!

Apologies for the long delay - this question slipped through the cracks :-(

For me, I would always be using the newest version of OEM that I can, and have that single installation manage *all* of my databases. The only time I would typically defer from that strategy was if I had a database that was so old that the newer EM could not run an agent against it.

You can run the management repository on any existing server, or even the same server as a target that you are managing, but obviously that does introduce certain limitations - ideally the management server sits "outside" the objects you want it to monitor, but I understand the desire to keep license overheads down.

Each version of OEM will come with a set of hardware requirements. For example, you can see the v13 requirements here:

https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E73210_01/EMBSC/GUID-8A43781B-83E3-4BB9-A3DA-A0F6BA9823D8.htm#EMBSC126

and unless you're managing hundreds or thousands of databases, the needs are fairly small.

Thanks - we'll get that fixed
