Hi Tom ,

This is the first time I am writing to you having heard tell that you are the one to ask in the Oracle world ....my query (pun intended :)) is simple .....as an aspiring oracle DBA professional which certification path 11g or 12c is it wiser to pursue at the moment ?

To me it seems divided between the current greater demand for 11g projects as opposed to 12c which is yet to be universally adopted vs the future proofing that oracle 12c would provide .....basically I am fearing that if I go for 12c directly I might not find relevancy in the job market for some time to come with projects preferring 11g certified in general over 12c .

One obvious solution I came up with is to do the 11g certification and then upgrade to 12c , and should I follow this compromise would it be better to pursue dataguard and rac/grid certifications in 11g or 12c after I upgrade ? I dint find any upgrade paths for these areas of the admin skills only for the core part .

Thanks so much in advance for your valued insights into same and I would really appreciate your taking the time to help me in this regard !

Yours sincerely

12c includes the biggest changes in Oracle's database architecture for years. Although many people are still running 11g systems, you will need to learn 12c if you want a long career as an Oracle DBA. If you only learn 11g now, then you'll have to update your skills in the near future.

If you're planning on getting certified right now, then your plan of starting with 11g and then upgrading to 12c is a good one.

Hi Toms Team ,

Thanks so much for the prompt reply and it is highly valued by me , however if you could advise me more about the "additional tech" -- Data guard , RAC etc certification pathways and would it be better to start with 11g ones and then later down the line go for 12c ones (assuming no upgrade path as there is with the core dba path ) or go for 12c directly ?

In my opinion, I'd start with 11g DBA (because a lot of places will be 11g sites for a while yet), then upgrade to 12c.

I would focus on the more specialist certifications when the need arises.
