    PL/SQL 101 Part 8: Working with Collections

In this article, Steven explores the collection datatype. An Oracle PL/SQL collection is a single-dimensional array; it consists of one or more elements accessible through an index value. Collections are used in some of the most important performance optimization features of PL/SQL, such as: (1) BULK COLLECT. SELECT statements that retrieve multiple rows with a single fetch, increasing the speed of data retrieval. (2) FORALL. Inserts, updates, and deletes that use collections to change multiple rows of data very quickly (3) Table functions. PL/SQL functions that return collections and can be called in the FROM clause of a SELECT statement. You can also use collections to work with lists of data in your program that are not stored in database tables.

    Working with Collections

Collections - PL/SQL's array-like structures - are "must-know" features of the PL/SQL language. They are used in key features, like FORALL and table functions. The three types of collections (associative arrays, nested tables and varrays) share many characteristics, but also have unique properties amongst them. Watch all the videos in this playlist to gain a solid grounding in PL/SQL collections.
