Amazon Web Services usurps ownership of the SYSDBA functions, which IMO seems to work pretty well. According to the DBA_ADVISOR_RECOMMENDATIONS view, there's still work to be done. Do you have any thoughts on what parameter tuning is still appropriate? Object defragmentation and memory pools allocation are the two examples I have in mind. TIA

Under RDS your capabilities are basically at the whim of what AWS is prepared to let you do, and what's available via the RDS_ADMIN package.

Pretty much with any managed service on a cloud provider, most of the focus shifts to good database design, good database code and SQL tuning.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not being critical of that. In my view, 99% of performance in a database lies in application/design tier...not on the infrastructure config.
