Thanks Tom, but do the 482 changes, with the emphasis on availability and change management, really constitute a new version of the Oracle DBMS?

I have a suspicion, that since Oracle 8 (Oracle late, affectionately), where I suspect there was a serious underestimation of the actual effort involved in incorporating Object-Orientation within a relational DBMS, Oracle are sensitive on the version issue, and are just a little trigger-happy to roll out a new version, where only a sub-version [though not subversion, ;o)] might have done.

Be nice if Oracle didn't uppercase the password before hashing it. Make an initialization variable like case_sensitive_passwords = TRUE or FALSE. Ask on install if we want it or not or default it to FALSE so it won't break old things.

Nice podcast. But kind of disappointing to know that the work on next book has not started yet. :( Can someone volunteer for the askus testing so that Tom can start writing the book. :-)

Tom,

I talked to someone who worked for oracle for 25 years. He told me that Oracle actually works on the next 2 versions at the same time.

So while you are developing version 11, you guys are developing requirements and doing design for version 12. Is that true?

Where do you guys come up with ideas for new features?

seanmacgc raises an interesting question: what does constitute a new version of any software package? Some of the things I've heard about 11g, for example, sound like some amazingly useful changes - things that might make a big impact on whether to deploy the product. Perhaps that warrants the new version: major addition of functionality. Change management and workload replay, for example, have the potential to be incredibly useful. I'm particularly excited about those given the environment in which I work: fast-paced, little formal change management, need to constantly tune.

Nice podcast... I wish I could have been there for the whole thing. Say, wasn't SQL*Calc a part of Oracle Version 5? I can't remember...

It sure was. V5 was one of my favorites, especially the $199 (or was it $99?) license for the PC version of V5.1c

You got a whole box of floppies and just about 3 linear feet of manuals. What a bargain!

bybhdbsw bring your own bottle AND database software??

Hi Tom,

I just listend to your Podcasts, and found it very interesting. But I have to say, that the sound quality ist very bad.
Especially for a non native speaker (like me) it's hard to understand.
The mp3 are encoded with 48 kbps. I don't think it should be a big problem to use 96 or even 128 kbps.
Also if you are on the phone there is a lot of noise.
It's a pity, that such valuable information is announced in such a bad quality.

Regards Wolfgang

FYI: your link to feed took me to register the RSS feed to Google Reader using Firefox, so I had to fire up IE to listen to the podcast.

Not in Firefox 2.0 - when I click on "OpenWorld 2006: Going to Eleven", Firefox saves the .mp3 that can then be comfortably listened.

I had an amusing conversation with a DBA last year in which he insisted that Oracle passwords were case-sensitive. I suppose that by coincidence he was suffering a typo when he wasn't fiddling with the shift key.

The recording of live workload sounds like a huge new leap -- very exciting, particularly in a heavily ad-hoc environment where predicting commonly executed queries is very difficult.
