OOW - The presentation is done
The moment I've been waiting for. The presentation is complete. Had a really good turnout - room sat over 1,000 and the room was full (takes a while to get that many people seated). We finished on time, had good questions at the end.
Thanks to everyone that came
It was funny what got spontaneous applause this year. It was one of the honorable mentions (extras we added at the end, things worth mentioning) - DBMS_OUTPUT. First it has no 1,000,000 byte limit anymore and 2nd it has no 255 characters per line limit either. Both got a wave of applause and a cheer.
Amazing how you can add all of this fancy stuff, but yet the thing that was most appreciated was DBMS_OUTPUT ;)
Mark Rittman wrote a bit about today as well...
Well, off to a customer meeting and then a meet and greet session at the OTN lounge. Recorded a podcast which should be available on otn.oracle.com tomorrow morning

Congratulations!
Any video recording available ?
I saw the buzz about Project Raptor. Looks cool and competitive with other GUIs. I wonder how far in place editing of a command in SQLPlus would go (i.e. being able to use the up arrow and then edit the previous line).
Tom
I could not get into your session - I did not pre-register for the session - and the crowd was even worse (or better:)) than last time!
I was hoping to say hi to you - will you be there at all tommorow? I know you have a session on thu but I wont be able to make it then.
Saw your book - I like the font changes you came up with :)

Hi, you may wanna check out rlwrap - it works pretty well

I'll gladly stand up and clap (and maybe utter "What took you so long" under my breath) when Oracle remove the 4000/32k bytes limit on varchar2.
Hi Tom,
Congratulations!!!!
I attended the session. It was an awesome presantation! Every thing was upto the expectations. I personally like TDE (Transparent Data Encryption) feature. I had some questions after the presantaion about Indexing a Encrypted column that you answered.
Again, Excellent Presantation, looking forward for your Expert one-on-one book.

- have you thought of using the dos command line version, as recommended by Tom?
how about video of the presentation for the unfortunate ones who could not attend??
Thanks
Next time don't use the flash on your digicam. Instead choose the slower shutter speed. Bump up the ISO settings to capture more light. The pic may blur a little.
Your new book and Lewis's new Oracle book is on my list.
Tom, I normally wouldn't post editing mistake but this one dramatically changes the meaning.
"you may not “export” the AWR data for any period of time and import it into another database for analysis."
I believe 'not' should be 'now'.
Tom, I normally wouldn't post editing mistake
You mean in the white paper right? I have some updates for that will be posting them on asktom (we moved the slides around and added some as well) and otn shortly.
thanks!
Tom, just got my copy of the new book. So far...so good....
;)

Agreed. I'd also suggest bracing the camera on the lectern to minimize blur and "stopping down" the exposure a stop or so. This will decrease shutter speed (also minimizing blur) and better capture the effect of the lecture hall lighting, which is usually fairly subdued.
It was very dark in there - but yes, I want to get one of those mini tripods for the future.
A tip for users of DBMS_OUTPUT and SET SERVEROUTPUT in SQL*Plus 10.2: test various values of SET ARRAYSIZE to tune performance.
This is new in SQL*Plus 10.2, and only has effect when connected to Oracle 10.2.

The "applause and a cheer" you heard was for the terrible speech coming to an end.
Someone said ...

I say ... guess we all turn into grumpy old men or women sooner or later eh?
But I am just guessing as I was sitting in the room next door for an update on ASM 10g release 2.
The "applause and a cheer" you heard was for the terrible speech coming to an end.
Nah, that just shows you weren't there (were you?)....
You have no clue when in the session that was ;)
but hey, thanks for playing pseudonymous man. So cool to show how "young" at heart you are (like about 5 years old) during the busiest week of the year here, this is *great*. Please come back - really. No one knows who you really are - it is so much fun to guess :)
Tom,
I thought your's and Cary's session was the best of the week. You two worked really well together. Thanks for signing the book. I hope to read it soon, but i still have a lot of Oracle documentation to read first ;)
Tom,
Could you please tell us the URL where we can download all the OOW technicall session presentation.
Thanks
this looks like a good place to start.
Not being at OOW - I reviewed the white paper Mark provided. Great pointers and insights for those of us still on 9.2 and thinking about upgrading. I especially loved the use of the expression "foobar" in your example! Being a military wife - I'm quite used to that expression (well, in it's acronym form anyways) but, never in a tech doc! Many thanks!
@Tom: Great presentation! cu next year
@All: if somebody wants to see the picture, that I was trying to make, here it is:

You mentioned using the conditional compilation for controlling what code compiles for which version of the database you are running. Of course this will *only* work so long as the version is 10gR2, since 9i or 10gR1 won't have a clue what to do with the compiler directive. Any chance of a patched version of the compiler coming out for 9i so that this might actually work?
conditional compilation
it is a going forward feature, it is not available in 9i - if you dropped and entire plsql runtime new into the database - well, that would be a more destabalizing event than upgrading to a version you know the runtime engine integrates with. It is not as easy as snapping in a new compiler (you have to have the 10g packages, the 10g sql, the 10g this, that the other thing - it is like a big sweater, pull one string....)
Hi Tom
I could not attend your session but, I'd like to know about Project Raptor. Can you tell me where can I find about it? Is it like PLSQL Developer or TOAD program?
Alberto Rico
Alberto -
see this
Hi Tom
Looking the shots, I think that Raptor is like PLSQL Developer (http://www.allroundautomations.com/plsqldev.html).
If Raptor is like this program, I think that it's going to be an excellent product.
