OOW - The presentation is done
The moment I've been waiting for. The presentation is complete. Had a really good turnout - room sat over 1,000 and the room was full (takes a while to get that many people seated). We finished on time, had good questions at the end.

It was funny what got spontaneous applause this year. It was one of the honorable mentions (extras we added at the end, things worth mentioning) - DBMS_OUTPUT. First it has no 1,000,000 byte limit anymore and 2nd it has no 255 characters per line limit either. Both got a wave of applause and a cheer.
Amazing how you can add all of this fancy stuff, but yet the thing that was most appreciated was DBMS_OUTPUT ;)

Well, off to a customer meeting and then a meet and greet session at the OTN lounge. Recorded a podcast which should be available on otn.oracle.com tomorrow morning

I saw the buzz about Project Raptor. Looks cool and competitive with other GUIs. I wonder how far in place editing of a command in SQLPlus would go (i.e. being able to use the up arrow and then edit the previous line).

I attended the session. It was an awesome presantation! Every thing was upto the expectations. I personally like TDE (Transparent Data Encryption) feature. I had some questions after the presantaion about Indexing a Encrypted column that you answered.

- have you thought of using the dos command line version, as recommended by Tom?

Next time don't use the flash on your digicam. Instead choose the slower shutter speed. Bump up the ISO settings to capture more light. The pic may blur a little.

Agreed. I'd also suggest bracing the camera on the lectern to minimize blur and "stopping down" the exposure a stop or so. This will decrease shutter speed (also minimizing blur) and better capture the effect of the lecture hall lighting, which is usually fairly subdued.
It was very dark in there - but yes, I want to get one of those mini tripods for the future.
A tip for users of DBMS_OUTPUT and SET SERVEROUTPUT in SQL*Plus 10.2: test various values of SET ARRAYSIZE to tune performance.
This is new in SQL*Plus 10.2, and only has effect when connected to Oracle 10.2.

Not being at OOW - I reviewed the white paper Mark provided. Great pointers and insights for those of us still on 9.2 and thinking about upgrading. I especially loved the use of the expression "foobar" in your example! Being a military wife - I'm quite used to that expression (well, in it's acronym form anyways) but, never in a tech doc! Many thanks!

You mentioned using the conditional compilation for controlling what code compiles for which version of the database you are running. Of course this will *only* work so long as the version is 10gR2, since 9i or 10gR1 won't have a clue what to do with the compiler directive. Any chance of a patched version of the compiler coming out for 9i so that this might actually work?
conditional compilation
it is a going forward feature, it is not available in 9i - if you dropped and entire plsql runtime new into the database - well, that would be a more destabalizing event than upgrading to a version you know the runtime engine integrates with. It is not as easy as snapping in a new compiler (you have to have the 10g packages, the 10g sql, the 10g this, that the other thing - it is like a big sweater, pull one string....)
