Do it yourself asktom...
I was reading Scott Spendolini's blog this morning and he reminded me of something I forgot to announce. After repeated requests over time - the application behind the asktom website is available for download.
You can read Scott's take on this here. Basically - the APEX team is providing a set of "packaged" applications and other open source projects to anyone that wants them.
I would like to take a moment to thank two people for their help recently. They are - Christina Cho:
and Marco Adelfio:
the team that rewrote asktom for the purpose of making the "ask the expert" software available. They had the unenviable task of taking a bit of software that evolved from my lovingly handwritten mod-plsql first version of asktom, into the first html/db application. Where it got "stuck" in a time warp - stuck at version 1.4.something of html/db - a release that was never actually released. It was not really upgradable - so they took it and redid it.
I've been very pleased with the results so far...

I have been waiting for the downloads ever since you announced this on your blog a while ago :))
Hope to put it to good use and convince my user community more than ever before, on why and more importantly how we can harness the capabilities our existing 10gR2 database.
Probably the topic for another blog or query on asktom.. my firm's IT philosophy is why build when you can buy.. end state.. we have multiple solutions running on various "databases" and we interface data into our Oracle Financials database..
We could have built half those apps and run it on our existing Oracle database, with a way better GUI and more importantly.. much much better data integrity..

Once you start seeing those red X circles and yellow ! triangular marks on every page you develop, it will change the way you write HTML code.
HTML is, code after all; we just never had a good "instant" compiler to let us know we are doing something wrong.
On asktom.oracle.com home page alone there are 27 warnings and 1 error.
Ah, but what is AskTom without Tom? It's just some HTML pages and a database.
andrea - you can install Ask The Expert on apex.oracle.com (after requesting a workspace), then export the application without supporting objects to install into XE. You'll need to move the database tables yourself, but the app can run just fine on XE.

What does this mean? That Apps will not be supporting modplsql? Or that modplsql simply won't ship with Apps?

The "AskTom" new website is really cool !! There are a lots of nice new enhancements.
I have a little suggestion :) Would you mind asking Christina Cho or Marco Adelfio to add a "Back" Button on the page ? ( Back to the previous page,
instead of returing to the home page ). I think that will be a userful gui enhancement and that can also reduce the database resource usage.

Frank -- I'm glad you like it. Can you clarify what you mean by Back to the previous page, instead of returing to the home page? I assume you don't mean duplicating the browser's Back button.

Let me show you a little example.
Click the "1 - 15 Next" "Next" Button 4 times and you will see
"Previous 61-75 Next"
and then click any one of the subject on that page.
After I read that question/answer on that subject. I could not find a "Back" button on that subject page to return to
"Previous 61-75 Next"
So I have to click the "Back" button on the IE browser and return to
"1 - 15 Next"
I need to click the "next" button 4 times to get to "61 - 75" again.

That seems to be a quirk of IE (one of many reasons to go Firefox -- it takes you back to the right spot).
We added a Open links in new window option to the homepage, so if you check that box, you won't lose your place any more.
Gents, what workspace do i need to be in to deploy this app?
