You Asked

Hello, Ask Tom Team.

What is the best practice: small redo log groups or have a few but with a bigger size?

Thanks in advanced.

Generally I like my size redo logs so that they switch about every 30-60mins.

There are some overheads to a switch (these used to be large, but with each release its gets better) so I'm not fan of really really frequent switches.

Hmm. Ok. So you size your redo logs to switch between 30 and 60 minutes (because obviously it depends on the app).

1. You view how frequently they switch in the alert log and then increase or decrease the size?

2. How many groups, how many member per group?

Yes, or look at v$log_history

2. How many groups, how many member per group?

Opinions vary. I typically go with enough groups so that I'll never got stuck wrapping around and having to wait for a group to be archived.

Some people prefer 2 members per group because they worry about redo log corruption. I've generally gone with 1 per group and never had an issue.
