We are upgrading 11204 Databases to 12201.
We build new linux server, create 12201 DB, expdp from 11204 then impdp into 12201.
We don't do "in place" upgrade.

To upgrade a master with physical standby, what will you recommend ?
I think the best way is to upgrade master first, 3 TB, 1 weekend,
then build physical standby next, which might take 2 - 3 days.
Can you give me Oracle Documents for this method ?

Is there a way to upgrade physical standby first, then upgrade master next ?
If there is, can you give me the Oracle Documents ?

I would start here

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/upgrade/overview/upgrading-oracle-database-wp-122-3403093.pdf

which has links to other resources as well.

And obviously, the standard Upgrade manual as well.

But in general, when you have Standby database, the process is you start the Standby in the new oracle_home, and then upgrade the primary. The redo logs will effectively upgrade the standby as well.

This is outlined in detail in Appendix B of the 12.2 DataGuard guide in the standard documentation.
