Hi,

Which of the below mentioned approaches should be better performance wise? The Update vs Insert/Delete both take almost equal time ... Is this correct or am I doing something wrong? 

I know about the limitation of Ora archive as well as the change in plan for queries which just scanned the index previously, but what surprises me is that an update takes the same time as an delete/insert.

I'm wondering if you're hitting a row migration issue, eg

So an in-place update costs me around 11128 block gets and 436 consistent gets. Now I'll add row archival:

See the huge jump in work done ? Now, that is not due to row archival, but the fact that I added the column (which consumes no space) and then updated the rows to be larger. So we had re-locate a stack of them:

Perhaps that is a cause for your larger than expected cost in update, as opposed to a table *created* with archival

I did a check and there are no chained rows. I used the below mentioned approach

create table CHAINED_ROWS (
owner_name varchar2(30),
table_name varchar2(30),
cluster_name varchar2(30),
partition_name varchar2(30),
subpartition_name varchar2(30),
head_rowid rowid,
analyze_timestamp date
);

After a CHAINED_ROWS table is created, you specify it in the INTO clause of the ANALYZE statement.

ANALYZE TABLE row_mig_chain_demo LIST CHAINED ROWS;

SELECT owner_name,
table_name,

FROM chained_rows

I am able to enable ora archiving pretty quick, but to disable it takes forever? Any idea Why?
DDL from a tool, I can send from DBMS_METADATA if this does not suffice

I am able to enable ora archiving pretty quick, but to disable it takes forever? Any idea Why?


Its much easier to add a column than to drop one...

SQL> create table t as select * from dba_objects;

Table created.

SQL> set timing on
SQL> alter table t add x int;

Table altered.

Elapsed: 00:00:00.01
SQL> alter table t drop column x;

Table altered.

Elapsed: 00:00:00.44
