You Asked

Greetings Team,

I am very curious to know how you actually manage you're work spaces.I mean you always face different kind of questions all day along. How many laptops you use(of course you are using VM).
But my question is if you guide someone for installation or scripts installation for particular stuff how do you do it!!

One more..

If you guys stuck into something do you pass those question to someone else (your tom team member) or do you google or do you ask for someones help in company.

Regards

I have a few laptops - not because of AskTOM, simply because of needs (larger one for home, travel one etc). But I used them for AskTOM so I have some flexibility, eg I have a couple of 11g versions on one, a 12.1 version (pluggable and non-pluggable) on the other etc.

We also have access to some cloud accounts internally, and I have a linux VM so I can do both Windows and Linux platform questions.

I would love to say that my physical work area is well laid out and very organized .... but that would be a lie :-)

Other than that, its pretty much Notepad++ and SQL Plus for most of my questions on AskTOM.

If you guys stuck into something do you pass those question to someone else

We do our best to answer our questions ourselves, because

a) its good/free training for us
b) it proves a point that with research and testing, an answer can be found

But we balance that with wanting to give the *best* answer. So we can reach out to resources inside the company. For example, if I get a question on globalization or character set issues, I can *probably* answer it, but I'll also reach out to the NLS team, because they have *way* more experience in the area than I do.

I deleted the review because it was an anonymous review that wasn't adding anything to the conversation, just having a rant.

Now it's a named review that isn't adding anything to the conversation, just having a rant.

....

a) you have access to several version of Oracle database.
b) while submitting question's to AskTOM we put the database version we are looking for.

but you still don't use the right version of database to answer the question, thought you still have access to several version of Oracle database.

and if we highlight that you are not using the right version to answer the questions in AskTom - then it becomes "a rant - having nothing to add in this follow up"

we have stressed this enough in the past @ https://community.oracle.com/ideas/6772

Then why the heck -
a) you have access to the several version of Oracle database?
b) why do you still maintain the "AskTom Feedback page" ?

If things goes this way, then we quit AskTom soon.

I've blogged about this before

https://connor-mcdonald.com/2016/03/23/the-death-of-the-demo-script/

At AskTOM, we are not in the cut/paste business. We are in the business of expanding the knowledge of database professionals.

Aman Sharma - This is a public forum, you should respect the efforts provided by the AskTOM team in helping many database professionals.

So have your questions polite and your above response sound bit harsh to me.

Thanks for your input. But you needn't worry about us - we've got thick skin. You wouldn't believe some of the responses we get :-)

Connor,

Please dont be fun. we can't stop laughing here.

Our question is very simple.
a) you have access to multiple database verssion.
b) when we post question, we give you the database version.

Please read the respone in the above asktom link.

they have a question that feature doesn't (even)exists in Oracle 11g database.

but you took that question to 12c database and said it is a "Syntax error" - which is incorrect.

you should have said that " this feature doesn't exists in 11g but added as new feature in 12.2"

we are not expecting a cut/paste business from you, but make use of the right database version to answer the question - that helps a lot.

When you quit, make sure you ask for a full refund of every penny you paid to have your questions answered here.

"If things goes this way, then we quit AskTom soon."

We respect everyone's right to be a member of the AskTOM community, no matter what their tone they adopt in participating.

But equally, we're not forcing it on anyone. It's a free service. You don't need to be an Oracle customer, you don't even need an Oracle SSO account.

So we also totally respect Aman's right to *not* use AskTOM.

Awesome

Simple reason to ask you this question was to know how experience people do what they do so we can learn from it and apply it to our day to day working culture.
