Hi there,

I would like to ask a question regarding upgrading Oracle version in the future. Last time we do an upgrade from 11g to 12c and I found there is an error of “Unsupported PL/SQL datatype” in our dot net program. But somehow, we managed to fix it by installing "ODP.NET and Oracle Client versions 12.1.0.2.0 or later for Windows". This solution was found in the Oracle document title as "Oracle 12c: DeriveParameters Fails With "Unsupported PL/SQL Datatype" (Doc ID 1638202.1)".

Right now, I worry about when the new Oracle version come out and let's say is version Oracle 13x and if we going to upgrade our Oracle version will this problem come out again? I would like to know is that error only happen during 11g to 12c? Or it is actually a bug from Oracle itself since there is a documentation regarding the fix? Or we also need to upgrade our "ODP.NET and Oracle Client versions" to latest version like previous we did for every subsequence Oracle version update?

We just want prepared ourself to make sure the next upgrade will be hassle-free. Thank you very much!

Regards,
Leonard

This issue was:

Bug 17389314 - ORACLE 12C: DERIVEPARAMETERS FAILS WITH "UNSUPPORTED PL/SQL DATATYPE"

We generally dont *deliberately* try to ship our products with bugs :-) but like all software, it can happen.

Can I guarantee that you wont hit any bugs the next time you do an upgrade ? No.

Can I strongly recommend that you do a diligent testing cycle whenever you change any major part of your application stack ? Yes.
