Hi Tom

I am a SQL Server DBA who recently found myself with a Oracle 11.2.0.4 database ruining on CentOS 6.7. Knowing very little Oracle I didn't yet realize that Oracle is not certified for use on CentOS, i now do having raised a service request with Oracle and hit a wall because of the OS.

Myself and our IT department do not know any Linux either except what we have picked up from Googling over the past couple weeks. This leads me to my question. We now have to move our database of 700Gb to a supported OS and the temptation from the IT manager is to place it on Windows but my gut feel is it will be better placed on a supported Linux system. would this be fair to say? what are the pro's and con's and how difficult is it to move the data between the 2 OS. There are approx 50-60 concurrent sessions so not a heavily used system with lots of users but does have an important purpose and is used daily by very few users.

Kind Regards
Paul

I've looked after systems running on Linux and Windows, and both worked perfectly fine for me.

*My* preference is Linux, because that is because *my* familiarity is with Linux (eg shell scripting etc) more so than Windows.

Generally the Linux port/patches come out a little earlier than Windows, and the install base worldwide is probably larger on Linux.

But really - what will drive this - is your expertise in the platform. If you've got a bunch of smart Windows people, and not much Linux skills...then go with Windows. If its the opposite, go with Linux.

Well, you can only have a max. 16K block size under Windows -- at least that's all I'm allowed on my laptop running Windows 10 / Oracle 12.
