Hi,

We have a bunch of non-RAC single instances (SE and EE). I'm thinking about still using a SCAN listener for these single instances as I could avoid any TNS configuration change when moving around databases between hosts.

Is there any pitfall or anything to consider when doing so?

Thanks,
Markus

There's no problem with doing that, but I suppose my question would be:

Is it the worth the trade off between

a) installing/maintaining/patching/etc the Oracle Grid infrastructure on each host

versus

b) the number of times you expect to move databases between hosts

If you are installing grid *anyway* (eg you're using ASM etc) then (a) might be fine. But if not, that might be an overhead for a benefit (b) that might never happen. After all, how often do you move databases ?

scan listener for single instances

Hi,

We have around 180 instances with approx. 350 service names. It's not uncommon that we move something.

The real trouble is to find and change all connect descriptors especially THIN JDBC ones. I hate them.

Upgrade of Grid Infrastructure shouldn't be that much overhead. Agreed?

Cheers, Markus

:-)

"Upgrade of Grid Infrastructure shouldn't be that much overhead."

Depends on the level of testing etc you are committed to in your organisation

Sorry, it's me again.

Why did you state "a) installing/maintaining/patching/etc the Oracle Grid infrastructure on __EACH__ host"?

It's only 2 - 3 hosts where I have to install grid infrastructure. The rest is done via "remote_listener" registration. Correct?

Cheers, Markus

That is my understanding, yes.
