Hi Tom,

We took a backup of prod database running on 11.2.0.4.0 and refreshed it on test database running on 10.2.0.4.0. We are unable to start to start our 10g database and receiving an error. We don't have a backup of our controlfiles as they are deleted on time of refresh.

Erro:
ORA-00201: control file version 11.2.0.0.0 incompatible with ORACLE version 10.2.0.0.0

Your help and guidance is appreciated.

Thanks

You cant restore an 11.2.0.4 backup onto 10.2.0.4. The data dictionary is different and each datafile is (probably) stamped as saying "I belong to an 11.2.0.4 version".

In the Upgrade guide, you can see this from the notes on the 'compatible' parameter

"After upgrading to Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2), you can set the COMPATIBLE initialization parameter to match the release number of the new release. Doing so enables you to use all features of the new release, but prevents you from downgrading to your earlier release."

You'll need to use datapump.
