You Asked

Tom

Is Expert one-on-one ebook version available? If No, will it be made availble?

Thanks

- Sri

and we said...

if you get Expert Oracle Database Architecture - then Expert one on one Oracle is included as a CD in the book itself.

Else, all ebooks are available on Apress.com - they do have them.

Couple days ago, I downloaded the ebook version of Expert Oracle Database Architecture 9i and 10g
Programming Techniques and Solutions, not the actual book. (After reading the review, I could not
wait so long to receive it shipped) Would I still get the CD if I request for one? Or do I have
to buy the actual book?

Thanks

You'd have to ask apress how that all works with the ebooks - I'm not sure, you probably need to buy the book to get the physical CD that comes with the book.

Tom:

I had your one on one expert 8i book.

is this book Oracle Database Architecture 9i and 10g different and do you recommend upgrading.

thanks,

Followup   April 1, 2008 - 9am Central time zone:

well, the 9i and 10g in the title would be an indicator that - yes, it is different.

I cover lots of changes from 9i and 10g.

It would be more relevant than the 8i book today - yes.

Tom,

In the introduction to "Expert Oracle Database Architecture" you state...

"The sheer volume of new material required in updating Expert
One-on-one for 9i and 10g was at heart of the decision to
split it in two books... The second book will be called
Export Oracle Programming"

Is there still a plan to publish this 2nd book?

Followup   April 1, 2008 - 10am Central time zone:

it is a matter of finding sufficient free time...

Tom:

I found out we are upgrading from 9i to 11g.

are you releasing any books on 11g or shall i get the 10g book and most stuff will apply.

By the way, do you recomend that kind of upgrade (bypassing 10g).

Followup   April 1, 2008 - 9pm Central time zone:

if I were upgrading - I would (have) be going to 11g - yes.

I do not have an 11g specific book at this time.

Tom:

There is another book "effective oracle by design" you wrote. Do you recommend that one too or the
other one "Effective programming techniques".

I am more of a designer/developer than a dba.

Are these the only two books right now you have.

Followup   April 2, 2008 - 3pm Central time zone:

Effective Oracle by Design is "how should I approach using Oracle"

Expert Oracle Database Architecture is "how Oracle works"

Those are the two active/current books - yes.

Tom:

Which one is more targeted for application development and database design?

are they both useful and they have different info.

Followup   April 2, 2008 - 7pm Central time zone:

They are totally different - and if you ask me - both are necessary.

You need to understand how Oracle works
You need to now how to approach development given how Oracle works

If I had to pick one or the other - I'd pick Expert Oracle Database Architecture - because if you know how something works, you can approach working with it intelligently (best guess). The other book will help you to not have to guess as much.

Hi Tom

The second edition of "How Oracle Works" is out with the 11g update.
But "How to approach Oracle" is still with the updates up to the date Aug, 2003.
The Oracle Developer Community is waiting to hear from you soon.

Hi Tom

Could you comment on "Expert Oracle Programming"? Any possibility of the new book? Do you think that you could spend time to write a such book in near future?
(I am a little biased towards Programming than Architecture. Never mind it. ;-)
Please add your comments so that this post appears in your homepage and other people would add their opinion.
