Hi Tom,

Thanks for this great resource! I am sure there are many others out there like myself who spend several hours a day reading the questions and your answers.

Since so many people seem to be very curious about the architecture of your site, have you considered adding a page of site statistics? I would be interested in seeing how many hits the site gets per hour or per day, the size of the database, etc. I know that your site must be getting more popular by the day and like my favorite sports team, I guess I'm just interested in how you are doing.

I'm sure you are very busy with questions, conferences, books and such and probably don't have the time. By the way, the Expert book is outstanding! I recommend it to everyone I talk to.

Best of luck, and thanks again!

Interesting Idea. I'll have to actually change my architecture to accomidate that tho!

I'll need a materialized view or two to support the traffic reports (currently, I just scan away when I'm interested but the table has a couple hundred thousand records in it -- people clicking away would kill me).

I'll do it some weekend when its raining out ;)

Thanks for the feedback on the book, appreciate it.

It would be nice to limit the search by date

Search/Archive

Hi Tom,
Just to say that in the page once when we enter after clicking the question, 'search' and 'archive' does not work with "right click" - "open in new window" - every other link works with. I really apologize if its a problem with my IE browser.
Thanks a lot for your solid support.

It's due to the javascript -- it is very common on many websites and it is not limited to IE.

Hopefully this will help you

Hi Tom,

It's nice to be able to provide you with some information for once [having benefited from your reviews many times]. If you change the html for you link to...

<a href="</code> http://www.google.com"
onclick="window.open('
http://www.google.com','' <code>; return false;" target="_blank">link text</a>

then you get the best of both worlds. Right click -> open in new window works as it uses the href. Clicking the link works as the click event fires and cancels the href out [because of the return false]. If the user has javascript disabled then clicking the link still works as there is a target attribute set to blank.

The only problem is the "geniuses" who are write the spec for XHTML have decided that target is a deprecated attribute [I guess to get round "annoying popups"] without realising that HTML applications [rather than webpages] sometimes need it!

Hope this helps.

Sorry,

Just noticed you are using javascript for submitting the form...not for opening a window which is the normal one people complain about. Obviously this won't work for this case....

We collated all of the tributes and presented them to Tom in a book a few weeks back. (He was very touched by the sentiment).

We'll be putting together something for public viewing in the near future.
