You Asked

Tom,

I am a beginner. Can you guide me to what is the best resource for learning PL/SQL and understanding the basic oracle administration.

Thanks a lot.

and Tom said...

I would read this manual from start to finish:

</code> http://docs.oracle.com/cd/A81042_01/DOC/server.816/a76965/toc.htm <code>

if you remember 1/4 of that, you'll already know 2x what most people do. I find that to be an excellent document.

Learning Oracle

arunima, November 26, 2001 - 3:54 pm UTC

That was a quick response. I would read this. But I feel this document may not give me much hands on experience.

Can you suggest me something for improving the hands on skill on PL/SQL and Oracle administration.

Thanks a lot.

search for

feurstein oracle

on www.amazon.com -- i understand his books on PLSQL are well regarded with lots of examples to work through.

excellent advice

There is no shortcut way to becoming proficient at Oracle. Look for a beginner's book on Oracle if you only want the tip of the iceberg. See Amazon for reader reviews.

>There is no shortcut way to becoming proficient at Oracle...

Well, rumor has it that Larry is going to announce a new product at OpenWorld - Oracle Internal. It's basically a chip (Sparc of course, running jvm 1.3.1) that is inserted into your cranium. It allows instant access to all things Oracle (via a wireless interface). Fortunately Oracle have moved away from Power Unit pricing. Otherwise, you would have to translate your brain power into the appropriate MHz leading to disproportinate licensing costs. Remember to shave your head before you go.

You are right of course. Just trying to take a break from studying for the 9i OCP upgrade exam that is going to be offered at OpenWorld...

Hi, Tom.

I find this document exellent too. You have recommended me to read this early. But now I am looking for the document for Oracle9i. Can you recommend me one?
I cannot find Oracle9i concepts on Oracle.com

</code> http://otn.oracle.com/

That will get you to all of the oracle9i docs, click on "list all of the books" and you'll get to:

Make the right choice...

Sven Bleckwedel, November 27, 2001 - 11:39 am UTC

Arunima,

Do a favor to yourself, and acquire Tom´s Book. It contains a lot of useful information. I readed some Oracle books (from Oracle Press and anothers), but like Tom´s book I had not found equal.

The Best Way...

Andre Whittick Nasser, November 27, 2001 - 12:45 pm UTC

I'll give an obvious, though not mentioned suggestion: the Oracle University courses will give theory and practice (trough labs).

I know they're expensive -- around US$1000 each -- but if you think of cost/benefit, they're the best you can get. It seems you should pay attention to the Development track. You can just begin by taking two courses:

- Introduction to Oracle9i: SQL
- Introduction to Oracle9i: PL/SQL

If you are more ambitious, you can consider getting certified, which is a BIG market differential. A can affirm that myself.

Take a look at:

Certification:

Another Learning Option

Chip Briggs, November 27, 2001 - 6:19 pm UTC

The Oracle Learning Network has excellent online courses:
</code> http://www.oracle.com/education/oln/

The Oracle9i OCP Upgrade modules are excellent preparation
for the Oracle9i DBA Upgrade exam.

The Oracle Press PL/SQL books by Scott Urman and Joe Trezzo
are great resources (as well as the O'Reilly books by
Steve Feuerstein). If possible, consider attending a
local Oracle Users group and the IOUG-A Live conference:
http://www.ioug.org

The Oracle Developer Tools User Group has a web site:

Oracle online documentation is not available for any version

A reader, September 13, 2004 - 2:50 pm UTC

Tom,

Do you have any idea of why the Oracle online documentation is giving the following error every time I try to access to any web page?
The error message is the following
"
ORACLE

Sorry, this page was not found. (ErrorDocument 404)
"
I have tried to acces the online documentation for 8i or 9i, and as soon as I tried to go from the index into the actual documentation I got the error.

This is one of the addresses I have tried:

</code> http://tahiti.oracle.com/pls/tahiti/tahiti.drilldown?levelnum=2&toplevel=a76965&method=FULL&chapters=0&book=&wildcards=1&preference=&expand_all=&verb=&word=cursors#a76965 <code>

If you want to enter to any of the topics show in this page you will get the error. This same thing happends for 9i as well.

I now this is not connected with you but as you are part of Oracle I hope you will know when this is going to be fixed.

Thanks.

Oracle online documentation is not available for any version

A reader, September 13, 2004 - 4:38 pm UTC

Thanks for checking this out Tom.

I am still getting the error. I have tried in differents machines in our network, and I also tried in a machine with direct access to a DLS connection (not through a firewall) and it is running into the same error every time.

The below addresses are the 8i and 9i online documentation for the topic cursors and sql areas. This addresses should go directly to the documentation (instead of going to the index first) but they are returning the error message every time I try. Would you try these two addresses and check if you are able to access the documentation?

I use otn.oracle.com -- i haven't had any problems with that tahiti link, but frankly, i've never used tahiti -- otn has a better set of docs, just as searchable (wasn't always true -- 3, 4 years ago maybe)

suggest you try otn.oracle.com

Another comment about this Tom.

A friend of mine just tried from his home machine using a direct DSL connection and he is getting the same error messages when he tries to accesses to the online documentation.

Thanks

Dave, September 13, 2004 - 5:42 pm UTC

I think there may be a problem with logging into OTN, if i go to any OTN link without being logged in I get that.

If i already logged into otn, it works out.

It used to take me to the login screen. Im sure the OTN people know about it

holy long URL Batman !

robert, September 13, 2004 - 6:21 pm UTC

that long URL up there streches the page waaaay over to the right.
maybe should have the dev guy wrap it.

Oracle online documentation is not available for any version

A reader, September 13, 2004 - 7:22 pm UTC

I logout and login again onto OTN and now works.

It looks like there might be a problem with the login to OTN, because it used to take me to the login screen before.

Thanks Tom and Dave for your help.

oracle education in US

A reader, November 23, 2008 - 10:30 am UTC

Hi Tom
I am big fan of you.
I am looking for a Oracle education in U.S.
Two years ago I went to oracle university to take oracle 9i dba courses.(3 months)

Recently I found Oracle diploma program in Virginia International University.(1 year). But I am not sure if it is good or not.

Which institution can u reccomend me for oracle education?
It might be 11gDBA,AppsDBA,RAC,appserver,erp,..

I really appreciate your advise

Tom Kyte
November 24, 2008 - 5:29 pm UTC

Honestly - I would not look to a University or College for an education in Oracle.

I'd look for an entry level job with a good mentor available.

Ricardinho, November 25, 2008 - 9:26 am UTC

Thanks for ur suggestion Tom.
I totally agree.
I work as a oracle dba,and working is the best way to learn.
I also want to improve my skills at RAC,AppServer,AppsDBA,Datamining,Datawarehouse,ERP,...
Should I take courses to learn them? cos these subjects are a little bit complicated.
and
What area about oracle do u reccomend us to learn?
I appreciate your suggestions

Thanks

Since you are asking for "life advice", I recommend you never ever use IM speak (text messaging shorthand) in real life communication.

Reason:

It might not bother some people.

To other people however, it makes you look like you are twelve years old and they will lose respect for you immediately.

So, since the people that would not be bothered by it would not be bothered by proper sentences, and since the other group of people are likely to be your management - or prospective employers - you should err on the side of caution and use proper words.

You can take the courses - sure. But, that is a large list - any one of those topics would be a career path in itself.

Ricardinho, November 25, 2008 - 10:07 pm UTC

Thanks a lot Tom
Sorry for any inconvinience.

Tom Kyte
November 28, 2008 - 4:05 pm UTC

No problem for me - it is just that you were asking for "life advice" that might be among the most important bits of it you could get from me.

Deadly serious here.

I've received cover letters with this 'IM speak' in it. We laugh at them, make fun of them, as we discard them.

Same with resumes, or email contacts.

With your friends, maybe it doesn't matter. And as you sit there with your friends, you cannot comprehend it mattering to anyone. But, in the rooms where your material is read after you submit it - it really matters. It doesn't matter how smart you are, how good of a programmer/DBA you are, how personable you are - if you put that into professional communication - you are missing opportunities you never knew you had.

It is like dressing nicely for the initial interview. It matters.

tahiti is in dying ?

Sokrates, February 10, 2010 - 10:41 am UTC

hallo Tom

what is the preferred website to online
browse and search
Oracle Documentation ?
(please don't tell me "google")

I always used to use tahiti.oracle.com for that, since some weeks, I noticed difficulties from time to time.
(google used to help in most cases - not in all !)

Today, I encountered
"
Access Denied
You don't have permission to access " http://www-portal-stage.oracle.com/splash/www/index.html" on this server.

Reference #18.3555293e.1265819506.146b6
"
when trying to open tahiti.

so I switched to
www.oracle.com
succeeded in navigating to
http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/index.html
and found a
"right arrow Search Oracle Documentation "
at the very top !

GREAT I thought to myself

However, this link only gives me
http://www.oracle.com/pls/db92/db92.federated_search
"
No Response from Application Web Server
There was no response from the application web server for the page you requested.
Please notify the site's webmaster and try your request again later.
"

I don't know the site's webmaster so there is few I can do over that .

I find it truly very embarrassing that Oracle doesn't seem to hav the ability to maintain an open (for everyone) browseable and searchable online documentation !!

sure I can download local mirrors of the documentations but they are not searchable
- for example my local mirror of 11.2 documentation library tries to contact
http://www.oracle.com/pls/db112/search
(without success at the moment !)

That's really bad.

wow
